ABU DHABI: The United Arab Emirates has officially introduced severe new penalties for illegal wildlife trafficking, signaling a zero-tolerance policy toward the exploitation of endangered species.

Under the latest federal regulations, individuals caught in the illicit trade of exotic animals and plants face up to 15 years in prison and substantial fines of up to Dh2 million.

This major legislative update aims to tighten border controls and protect global biodiversity by eliminating loopholes previously used by smugglers.

Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, emphasised the government's commitment to dismantling trafficking operations completely.

The updated laws grant border and environmental authorities enhanced powers to execute immediate seizures of illegal biological specimens at all entry points.

By significantly increasing the legal and financial risks, the UAE aims to deter international syndicates from using the country’s advanced transit hubs and to ensure strict compliance with international conservation treaties.
