Kyiv: Russia launched one of its biggest aerial attacks on Ukraine since the start of the war, firing around 90 missiles and 600 drones overnight, Ukrainian officials said. The assault included the rare use of the hypersonic Oreshnik ballistic missile, marking only the third time the weapon has reportedly been used in the conflict.

At least four people were killed and more than 80 injured in Kyiv and nearby areas as explosions and fires hit several parts of the capital. Ukrainian authorities said residential buildings, schools, markets and cultural sites suffered damage during the overnight bombardment.

The Oreshnik missile reportedly struck the city of Bila Tserkva near Kyiv. Reuters footage analysis suggested the missile separated into multiple submunitions before impact. The Lukyanivka district of Kyiv, located near a missile production facility, was among the heavily damaged areas.

Russian officials said the strikes targeted military command centers, air bases and Ukraine’s defense industry in retaliation for alleged Ukrainian attacks inside Russia. Moscow claimed all intended targets were hit successfully, though Ukraine denied targeting civilians in Russia.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack and urged Western allies to increase pressure on Moscow. European leaders also criticized the use of the nuclear-capable Oreshnik missile, calling it a dangerous escalation in the war.
