Islamabad: A militant attack on a security compound in northwest Pakistan has left at least nine paramilitary officers dead, officials said, in the latest escalation of violence in the restive border region near Afghanistan.
The assault took place on Thursday in the Bajaur district, where attackers used an explosives-laden truck followed by heavy gunfire to breach a security facility. A senior security official in Peshawar said the vehicle was driven directly into the compound gate, triggering a prolonged exchange of fire.

Officials confirmed that nine paramilitary personnel and 10 militants were killed in the attack. At least 35 security personnel were also wounded, while the attackers reportedly fled after the initial assault.

The militant group Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan has claimed responsibility for the attack.

In a separate incident in Bajaur’s Inayat Killi area, three security personnel were injured when a mortar shell struck another Frontier Corps camp.

The latest violence follows a series of deadly attacks in the region, including a car bombing in Bannu that killed 15 people and a mortar strike in Hangu that left six dead earlier this month.

Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan continue to remain high, with Islamabad accusing militant groups of operating from Afghan soil—an allegation Afghanistan denies.
