NEW DELHI:  At least 89 people have been killed across Uttar Pradesh after powerful summer storms involving gales, lightning, and hail tore through India's most populous state. Government officials confirmed on Thursday that the adverse weather conditions, which occurred on May 13, resulted in significant casualties and widespread destruction across the region.

The Relief Commissioner’s office reported that in addition to the human fatalities, the storms caused 53 injuries and the loss of 114 livestock. Property damage was also extensive, with at least 87 houses recorded as damaged by the violent weather. Authorities have already instructed local officials to begin distributing financial aid to the families affected by the disaster.

Meteorologists attribute the lethal weather to intense pre-monsoon thunderstorm activity triggered by highly unstable atmospheric conditions. Uttar Pradesh, which is home to more than 240 million people, frequently experiences these severe weather patterns during the summer months leading up to the annual monsoon rains.

The impact of lightning strikes remains a recurring and deadly concern in the state. Experts from India’s weather office have warned of a rising trend in extreme weather events, linking the increased frequency of intense thunderstorms and lightning to changing climate patterns and rising global temperatures.

As relief operations continue, the state government remains on high alert for further atmospheric instability. The disaster underscores the increasing vulnerability of the region to extreme climatic events during the pre-monsoon season.
