New Delhi: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has significantly reduced the size of his motorcade to save fuel, a government source said on Wednesday, as global oil prices remain volatile amid tensions around the Strait of Hormuz and the wider Iran conflict.
Modi cut the number of vehicles in his convoy during recent visits to Gujarat and Assam while maintaining mandatory security arrangements under the Special Protection Group (SPG). Officials were instructed to include electric vehicles in the prime minister's convoy whenever feasible without making new purchases. The move comes after Modi urged citizens to adopt budgetary restrictions, including cutting unnecessary travel and conserving fuel, as worries about India's energy imports and inflationary pressures.
During recent trips to Gujarat and Assam, Modi reduced the size of his convoy while upholding the Special Protection Group's (SPG) required security measures.
India is extremely vulnerable to supply delays and price fluctuations associated with the Hormuz crisis and turmoil in West Asia because it imports more than 80% of its crude oil needs.
