Elderly US Tourist Dies After Falling Ill on Kashmir Houseboat

An 83-year-old tourist from the United States has died after falling ill while staying on a traditional houseboat in Dal Lake, one of Kashmir’s most popular tourist destinations.

The deceased, identified as John David Anderson, reportedly complained of chest discomfort before being rushed to a nearby private hospital. Medical officials confirmed that he was declared dead on arrival.

Anderson had been visiting the region with his wife, Judith Anne McCarthy, and was staying in a houseboat — a traditional form of accommodation widely used by tourists in Kashmir.

Authorities have initiated procedures to determine the exact cause of death, with police confirming that an investigation is underway.

Houseboats, which are permanently moored or occasionally mobile dwellings, are a signature feature of Kashmir’s tourism industry, particularly on Dal Lake and Nigeen Lake. These floating accommodations offer visitors a unique stay experience, combining traditional wooden interiors with modern amenities.

The incident comes as Kashmir witnesses a steady return of tourists, both domestic and international, following efforts to revive the sector in recent years. Local authorities continue to promote the region’s scenic destinations and hospitality as visitor numbers gradually increase
