CNN Founder Ted Turner Dies at 87

Ted Turner, the media pioneer who transformed global news broadcasting by launching CNN, has died at the age of 87.

Turner, a bold entrepreneur and risk-taker, founded CNN in 1980, introducing the world’s first 24-hour cable news network and reshaping how audiences consumed news. The channel gained global prominence, particularly during major events such as the Gulf War, where its live coverage set new standards for real-time reporting.

Born in Cincinnati in 1938, Turner took over his family’s struggling business before expanding into media by acquiring a television station in Atlanta. This move laid the foundation for the Turner Broadcasting System and eventually CNN.

Over the years, Turner built a vast media empire that included networks such as TBS, TNT, Cartoon Network, and Turner Classic Movies. In 1996, Turner Broadcasting merged with Time Warner, making him vice chairman of the global media company.

Beyond media, Turner was also a prominent figure in sports, owning teams like the Atlanta Braves and Atlanta Hawks, and winning the America’s Cup in 1977. He later focused on philanthropy and environmental causes, donating $1 billion to establish the United Nations Foundation and supporting conservation initiatives through his own foundations.

Turner’s influence extended far beyond television, leaving a lasting legacy in journalism, business, and global humanitarian efforts.
