Publishers sue Meta, claiming it violated copyrights in training AI with their books

NEW YORK: A coalition of prominent news and book publishers has filed a major lawsuit against Meta, alleging that the tech giant used copyrighted material without permission to train its artificial intelligence models. The lawsuit claims that Meta’s large language models were "fed" vast amounts of proprietary content, including news articles and literary works, to improve their conversational abilities.

The plaintiffs argue that this practice constitutes 'systemic theft on a commercial scale,' undermining the value of original journalism and creative writing. They are seeking significant damages and a permanent injunction to stop Meta from using their content without a formal licensing agreement.

Meta has defended its practices in the past, often citing "fair use" doctrines and arguing that AI training is a transformative process. However, this legal challenge follows a growing global trend of content creators demanding compensation as AI technology continues to reshape the digital landscape.
