Los Angeles: Doris Fisher, the co-founder of the American retail giant Gap Inc., has passed away at the age of 94. Alongside her late husband Donald, Fisher opened the first Gap store in San Francisco in 1969.
She is credited with naming the company as a nod to the ‘generation gap,’ successfully targeting a younger demographic by focusing on organized, affordable, and ready-to-wear staples like denim and T-shirts.
Under her visionary leadership, the business expanded into a global fashion empire that eventually included iconic brands such as Banana Republic and Old Navy.
Today, the corporation operates approximately 3,500 stores worldwide. Gap’s CEO, Richard Dickson, described Fisher as a ‘true original’ who integrated values of self-expression and inclusion into the company’s core culture. Fisher died peacefully surrounded by her family and is survived by her three sons.
