The ceremonial air of King Charles III’s state visit to New York was punctuated by a sharp call for historical restitution. During a high-profile tour of the 9/11 Memorial, NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani reignited a centuries-old colonial debate by publicly stating he would encourage the monarch to’"return’ the Koh-i-Noor diamond to India.

Mamdani, who has Indian heritage, noted that while the primary focus of the meeting was honoring victims of the 2001 terror attacks, the presence of the British Crown serves as a reminder of historical extraction.

The 105.6-carat gem, currently the centerpiece of the Crown Jewels in the Tower of London, was taken by the British Empire in 1849 following the annexation of Punjab.

While the UK maintains it was acquired through a legal treaty, critics argue the document was signed under duress by a child ruler. Mamdani's remarks have shifted the narrative of this royal tour, placing colonial accountability at the forefront of modern diplomacy.
