Dramatic rescue saves toddler trapped in 18-metre well in northern Syria

A three-year-old boy was safely rescued after falling into a deep water well in northern Syria, in an operation that drew urgent response from emergency teams and local residents.

According to the Syrian Civil Defence, the child fell into an artesian well approximately 18 metres deep in the town of Shmarakh, located in the northern countryside of Aleppo.

Rescue teams quickly arrived at the scene, where a local volunteer assisted in the operation by descending into the narrow well under the supervision of specialised crews. The volunteer was able to reach the child, secure him, and both were then carefully pulled to safety by civil defence personnel.

Emergency responders administered first aid at the scene before transferring the toddler to a hospital in Azaz for further medical evaluation. Initial reports confirmed that the child did not sustain serious injuries.

Officials said the incident highlights the ongoing dangers posed by uncovered wells in rural areas, where safety measures are often limited. The case has renewed calls for stricter precautions and protective measures to prevent similar accidents, particularly in communities with limited access to emergency services.

The successful rescue brought relief to the child’s family and local residents, while underscoring the critical role of rapid-response teams and community cooperation in emergency situations.
