Berlin: German authorities arrested a Kazakh national, identified as Sergej K., in Berlin on Tuesday for allegedly spying for Russian intelligence. Prosecutors stated on Wednesday that the suspect had maintained continuous contact with a Russian handler since at least May 2025.
The suspect is accused of gathering sensitive information regarding German military aid for Ukraine and photographing NATO military convoys on motorways.
He also reportedly targeted German defense contractors involved in drone and robotics development and provided photos of public buildings in Berlin to identify potential targets for sabotage.
Beyond gathering intelligence, Sergej K. allegedly volunteered to recruit additional agents for Moscow within Germany. This case highlights a growing trend of "disposable" agents being used for low-level sabotage and espionage.
This arrest follows a series of Moscow-linked plots uncovered since 2022, including recent phishing attacks against German officials. While Berlin continues to dismantle these espionage networks, Moscow has consistently denied any involvement in such activities.
