ABU DHABI: The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has initiated a vital support scheme for Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) residing in the United Arab Emirates who have suffered financial hardship due to the ongoing regional conflict. This one-time grant of Dh730 (approximately $200) serves as immediate relief for those facing job losses or significant salary reductions.

The assistance primarily targets land-based workers holding employment visas or Emirates IDs issued in Dubai and the Northern Emirates, including Sharjah, Ajman, and Fujairah. Recognising the precarious nature of employment during geopolitical instability, the Philippine government aims to alleviate the sudden ‘employment shocks’ experienced by thousands of its nationals.

To ensure transparency and accessibility, the Migrant Workers Office (MWO) in Dubai has introduced a streamlined online application process. Candidates are required to submit essential documentation, such as passport copies and proof of employment disruption, which may include termination notices or employer certifications regarding pay cuts.

Significantly, the authorities have included a ‘self-declaration’ provision to assist those who may struggle to obtain formal paperwork from their employers. This empathetic approach allows workers to attest to their circumstances personally, ensuring that technical hurdles do not prevent vulnerable individuals from receiving much-needed funds.

Once applications are verified and approved, the payouts are distributed via established money transfer services. This digital-first strategy not only manages high volumes of requests efficiently but also ensures that the financial aid reaches the beneficiaries swiftly, providing a necessary buffer during these uncertain times.

Ultimately, this initiative forms part of a broader humanitarian response by the Philippine administration to safeguard its global workforce. By offering both on-site financial aid and repatriation options, the government continues to demonstrate its commitment to the welfare and security of Filipinos navigating the complexities of the Middle East crisis.
