Washington DC: A 31-year-old man from California has been charged with attempting to assassinate US President Donald Trump after a shooting incident at a high-profile event in Washington, DC.

Federal authorities said the suspect, Cole Tomas Allen, tried to breach security during the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, an annual gathering attended by top politicians and journalists. He allegedly fired a weapon at a security checkpoint, injuring a Secret Service officer who was protected by a bulletproof vest.

Prosecutors told the court that the suspect intended to target the president and other senior officials. He now faces multiple charges, including attempted assassination, which could lead to a life sentence if convicted.

According to officials, Allen travelled from California to Washington days before the event and checked into the same hotel where the dinner was being held. During the event, he reportedly rushed through a security checkpoint carrying a weapon before being stopped by Secret Service agents, who quickly arrested him.

Authorities said weapons including a gun, a shotgun and knives were recovered, and more charges could be added as the investigation continues.

The incident has raised fresh concerns about political violence in the United States. However, the White House said the situation was handled quickly and does not see it as a major security failure.
