Trump Halts Envoys’ Travel as Iran-US Talks Fail to Materialise
US President Donald Trump has said he ordered his envoys not to travel to Pakistan for further discussions with Iranian officials, as anticipated indirect talks between Washington and Tehran failed to take place.
In remarks to Fox News, Trump stated that he had instructed his team to cancel planned travel, signalling a pause in diplomatic engagement. He emphasised that the United States would not pursue extended negotiations abroad, adding that Iran could initiate contact if it wished to move talks forward.
The development comes as Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi departed Islamabad without holding any meetings with US representatives, despite expectations that indirect discussions could occur during his visit.
While in Pakistan, Araghchi met senior leadership, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir. Talks focused on Iran’s positions and key red lines amid ongoing regional tensions and a fragile ceasefire environment.
Despite the high-level engagements, the absence of any contact between Iranian and American officials has raised doubts over progress in efforts to revive negotiations aimed at ending the conflict.
The situation unfolds against a backdrop of heightened tensions in the region, particularly linked to maritime disruptions and disputes in the Strait of Hormuz. Regional stakeholders have warned of broader economic and security implications if tensions escalate further.
Pakistani officials described the meetings as cordial and centred on bilateral relations and regional stability, while acknowledging that wider international negotiations remain stalled.
