Bogotá:  A bomb attack targeting a military base in the city of Cali wounded one person on Friday, as tensions mount ahead of the country’s presidential elections scheduled for May 31.

Authorities reported that two explosive devices were thrown at the facility, though only one detonated. The blast left a bus charred just meters from the base and caused significant alarm in the surrounding residential neighborhood. Following the explosion, soldiers cordoned off the area while police and fire units conducted a sweep for further threats.

Military officials identified dissidents from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) as the primary suspects. These remnants, who rejected the 2016 peace accord, have been increasingly active in trying to disrupt negotiations with the government of President Gustavo Petro.

Cali, Colombia's third-largest city, remains a frequent target for armed groups vying for control over lucrative drug trafficking routes to the Pacific. The attack underscores a broader rise in regional violence, with recent reports also indicating a separate car bomb incident near a military unit on Saturday.
