Uganda Man Admits Killing Four Children in Ritual Attack

Kampala: A 39-year-old man has confessed to stabbing four young children to death at a kindergarten in Uganda, telling investigators he believed the killings would bring him wealth through human sacrifice.

The accused, Christopher Okello Onyum, who holds both Ugandan and US citizenship, appeared in court where the charges were formally presented. Prosecutors said he gained access to the facility by posing as a parent before launching a knife attack on children aged between 15 months and two-and-a-half years.

According to the indictment, Onyum confessed to the killings in a recorded statement, claiming he was seeking “fortune or enrichment.” A medical evaluation found him mentally fit to stand trial, noting that while his thought processes were normal, he held beliefs in wealth through human sacrifice.

The kindergarten served malnourished and vulnerable children between three months and three years old. Prosecutors said evidence indicates the attack was planned over several days and carried out in a deliberate and sustained manner.

The incident sparked widespread outrage, with an angry crowd attempting to lynch the suspect before his arrest. Family members of the victims also reacted angrily during the court proceedings.

Uganda’s army chief, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has called for the death penalty in the case. Onyum remains in custody, with a trial date yet to be set.
