TOKYO: A 40-metre construction scaffold collapsed at a high-rise site in central Tokyo on Tuesday, leaving three workers in critical condition. The massive steel structure plummeted onto a busy pedestrian walkway, trapping laborers and crushing several vehicles below.

Emergency teams worked for hours to rescue those pinned under the debris, while nearly 30 others were treated for minor injuries. Preliminary reports suggest that sudden high winds may have triggered the failure, though investigators are also checking for potential anchoring lapses.

The Ministry of Land and Infrastructure has suspended all operations at the site for a comprehensive safety audit. This disaster has prompted an immediate review of high-rise safety protocols across the capital to prevent similar structural failures during inclement weather.
