PARIS: A high-speed TGV train traveling from Dunkirk to Paris collided with a heavy-duty transport truck at a level crossing in Bully-les-Mines on Tuesday.

The collision, which occurred in the Pas-de-Calais region of northern France, resulted in the tragic death of the 56-year-old train driver. The impact was severe enough to cause the front carriage of the TGV to derail, leading to significant structural damage.

Emergency services, including nearly 90 firefighters and medical teams, arrived quickly to manage the scene and evacuate 243 passengers. In addition to the fatality, two individuals remain in critical condition, while approximately 27 others sustained various injuries.

The truck involved was reportedly part of a specialized military convoy, raising immediate questions regarding the safety protocols for such heavy-duty crossings.

National transport officials, including the Transport Minister and the CEO of SNCF, visited the crash site to coordinate the response. Rail traffic between Béthune and Lens was suspended indefinitely as investigators worked to clear the wreckage and analyze the train's black box data. This marks the second incident involving a special convoy at a level crossing in the region within a single week.

Preliminary investigations are focusing on why the truck was stationed on the tracks as the high-speed train approached. The tragedy has reignited a national debate regarding the risks of level crossings on high-speed lines and the necessity for stricter regulations for oversized vehicle convoys.

A formal judicial inquiry has been opened to determine if mechanical failure or human error led to the disaster.
