SYDNEY: Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is scheduled to arrive in Singapore on Tuesday, for a high-level working visit centered on securing regional energy security. The primary focus of the bilateral talks with Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong will be the stabilisation of fuel supply chains, which have been severely strained by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

As a major regional refining hub, Singapore plays a critical role in Australia’s liquid fuel security. With global oil prices surging past $100 a barrel following the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, the Australian government is seeking to formalize new ‘energy corridors’ and storage agreements. These measures are intended to bolster Australia's domestic fuel reserves, which have come under scrutiny as international shipping routes face increased volatility.

Beyond immediate fuel concerns, the two leaders are expected to discuss the ‘Green Economy Agreement,’ focusing on the export of renewable energy from Northern Australia to Singapore via subsea cables.

This long-term transition to solar and hydrogen power is viewed as a strategic necessity to reduce the region's heavy reliance on Middle Eastern crude. Prime Minister Albanese emphasized that the partnership with Singapore is ‘foundational’ to Australia's economic resilience, particularly as the Indo-Pacific navigates the dual challenges of energy inflation and geopolitical instability.
