HAVANA: Cuba has commenced a large-scale prisoner release following a mass pardon that will see over 2,000 inmates set free. This executive action, announced by the Cuban Council of State, represents one of the most significant acts of clemency in the country’s recent history.
The pardons cover a diverse group of prisoners, including women, young people, and the elderly, as well as those suffering from chronic illnesses.
The selection process for the release focused on inmates who have demonstrated good behavior and have served a significant portion of their sentences.
However, the government explicitly excluded individuals convicted of serious crimes such as murder, rape, child abuse, and drug trafficking. High-level corruption and crimes against state security were also omitted from the pardon criteria.
This move comes at a time of severe economic hardship for the island, which is currently grappling with acute shortages of food, fuel, and medicine.
Observers suggest the mass release may be intended to alleviate the strain on the prison system’s resources or serve as a diplomatic gesture. Families have begun gathering outside correctional facilities to welcome their relatives. Meanwhile, the government maintains the initiative is a humanitarian effort focused on social reintegration.
