The United Nations Security Council has postponed a scheduled vote on a draft resolution aimed at authorizing the use of “defensive” force to protect commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, according to the official program.
The 15-member United Nations Security Council was due to vote on Friday morning on the proposal submitted by Bahrain. However, the schedule was quietly revised on Thursday night, delaying the decision.
Diplomatic sources said the reason cited for the postponement was the United Nations observing Good Friday as a public holiday, despite the date having been known when the vote was initially announced. No new date has yet been set.
The draft resolution comes amid heightened tensions in the region, where Iran has been accused of threatening maritime traffic through the strategic waterway, a critical route for global energy shipments. The situation has raised concerns over fuel supplies and broader economic stability.
Bahrain’s UN Ambassador Jamal Alrowaiei described the situation as unacceptable, saying, “We cannot accept economic terrorism affecting our region and the world.”
He added that the proposed text, which has undergone several revisions and reportedly has support from the United States, represents a critical moment for international action.
