IAEA Warns After Strike Near Bushehr Nuclear Plant in Iran
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been informed by Iran that a projectile struck near the premises of the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) early this morning, marking the fourth such incident in recent weeks.
According to Iranian authorities, one member of the site’s physical protection team was killed after being hit by projectile fragments. The impact also caused shockwaves and fragmentation damage to a building within the facility. However, officials confirmed that there was no increase in radiation levels following the incident.
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi expressed deep concern over the reported strike, stressing that nuclear power plant sites and their surrounding areas must never be targeted under any circumstances. He also noted that auxiliary buildings at such facilities may contain critical safety systems essential to nuclear security.
Grossi reiterated his call for maximum military restraint to prevent the risk of a nuclear accident, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the agency’s “seven pillars” for ensuring nuclear safety and security during armed conflict.
The IAEA continues to monitor the situation closely amid growing concerns over repeated incidents near sensitive nuclear infrastructure.
