UK Minister: Expanding Fossil Fuels ‘Wrong Lesson’ from Energy Crisis

London: United Kingdom energy minister Michael Shanks has warned against increasing reliance on fossil fuels in response to the ongoing global energy crisis, calling it the “absolute wrong lesson.”
Speaking to BBC, Shanks said the government’s focus is on protecting households from rising energy costs while accelerating the transition to cleaner energy.
His remarks came shortly after the UK government announced new planning rules requiring developers to install solar panels and heat pumps in all new homes in England, aiming to reduce long-term energy bills and dependence on volatile fossil fuel markets.
While acknowledging that oil and gas from the North Sea remain important in the short term, Shanks emphasised that the country’s future lies in building a clean power system.
He said the goal is to move away from the current cycle of price shocks driven by global fuel markets and create a more stable and sustainable energy system.
