New Delhi: Former US President Barack Obama has reignited debate over extraterrestrial life after saying in a recent podcast interview that aliens are “real,” while firmly dismissing conspiracy theories that they are being hidden in secret US facilities.
Speaking during a wide-ranging conversation with YouTuber Brian Tyler Cohen, Obama responded directly to a question about extraterrestrial life, saying: “They’re real, but I haven’t seen them.”
He later clarified his remarks, explaining that given the vastness of the universe, the statistical probability of life existing elsewhere is high. However, he stressed that the chances of Earth having been visited by aliens are low and that he saw no evidence of extraterrestrial contact during his presidency.
Obama also rejected long-standing claims that alien bodies or advanced technology are concealed at Area 51, the highly classified US Air Force facility in Nevada often linked to UFO conspiracy theories.
“They’re not being kept in Area 51, there’s no underground facility, unless there’s this enormous conspiracy and they hid it from the President of the United States,” he said.
Addressing the broader topic of unidentified aerial sightings, Obama reiterated previous statements acknowledging that US authorities possess footage of objects in the sky that defy easy explanation. In a 2021 television interview, he confirmed the existence of such records but noted that unexplained does not mean extraterrestrial.
Public interest in unidentified aerial phenomena (UAPs) has intensified in recent years, particularly after the Pentagon declassified and released Navy cockpit videos showing unusual high-speed aerial objects. US defence officials have categorised the incidents as UAPs, maintaining that their origins remain unknown but that there is no confirmed evidence linking them to alien life.
