Bangladesh : World leaders have responded swiftly to the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s (BNP) decisive success in the nation’s general elections, congratulating Tarique Rahman as his party prepares to form the next government. The party, led by Rahman, is reported to have secured a commanding majority of seats, a result seen as a significant political shift in Bangladesh after years of intermittent unrest and transitional governance.
Indian PM Narendra Modi extended warm congratulations to Rahman in a social media post, describing the outcome as a reflection of the trust placed in his leadership by the Bangladeshi electorate. Modi emphasised his intention to work closely with the incoming government to reinforce democratic, progressive and inclusive cooperation between the two neighbouring countries.
The prime minister of Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif, also congratulated Rahman on the BNP’s “resounding victory,” expressing hopes that ties between Islamabad and Dhaka will continue to grow stronger. Pakistan’s president Asif Ali Zardari echoed this sentiment, praising the peaceful conduct of the elections and reaffirming support for democratic partnership.
Regional voices within India also offered their support. Mamata Banerjee, chief minister of West Bengal, congratulated Rahman and extended best wishes to the people of Bangladesh, while expressing hope that friendly relations between the two nations would continue under the new leadership.
Foreign reactions highlighted international interest in a stable, democratic transition in Dhaka. Several observers noted that countries such as the United States have signalled readiness to engage with the BNP government, emphasising partnership and cooperation following the polls. These diplomatic responses underscore global hopes for continuity in bilateral and multilateral relations.
Despite the strong reactions from world leaders, some domestic actors have raised concerns about the election process and called for ongoing reforms. However, the overwhelming congratulatory messages from India, Pakistan, and other international capitals reflect broad global acknowledgment of Bangladesh’s democratic exercise and a willingness to pursue constructive engagement with its new government.
