Iran may dilute enriched uranium if sanctions fully lifted

Tehran: Iran has indicated it may downgrade the enrichment level of its uranium currently around 60 percent purity if the United States and other nations agree to lift all sanctions imposed against Tehran, multiple international outlets report. The proposal comes amid ongoing negotiations facilitated by Oman aimed at breaking the stalemate over Iran’s nuclear programme.

The head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization, Mohammad Eslami, told reporters that Tehran could dilute its highly enriched uranium mixing it with other material to lower its purity but only if all sanctions are removed as part of a comprehensive deal. He stressed that the offer depends on the completeness of the sanctions relief and not just partial easing.

Tehran’s suggestion is seen as a significant shift from its traditional position of refusing to curb nuclear activities without reciprocal concessions. The 60 percent enrichment level is close to weapons-grade, and its reduction would be viewed internationally as a confidence-building step.

The negotiations are part of broader efforts to reduce tensions between Washington and Tehran after years of acrimony, stalling talks and indirect diplomacy through third-party mediators. Both sides have so far expressed cautious interest in continuing discussions, though deep mistrust remains.
