Canada, China to Forge Strategic Partnership

Ottawa: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has welcomed a new strategic partnership with China, underscoring the need for closer cooperation between the two countries in response to shifting global economic and geopolitical dynamics. The announcement came during Carney’s visit to Beijing, his first official trip to China in nearly a decade, where he met Chinese President Xi Jinping to strengthen bilateral ties.

Addressing President Xi in the Great Hall of the People, Carney said the two nations aim to build on the “best of what this relationship has been in the past” to create a partnership suited for “new global realities,” emphasising cooperation in areas such as agriculture, energy and finance as immediate priorities.

The renewed engagement reflects efforts to move beyond years of diplomatic tensions and trade disputes, including retaliatory tariffs and policy disagreements that strained relations in recent years. Both leaders highlighted that this strategic partnership is designed to enhance economic resilience and offer opportunities for growth amid an uncertain global environment.

As part of the broader cooperation framework, Canada and China have engaged on trade facilitation, investment prospects and strengthened dialogue channels, including memorandums of understanding on energy, cultural exchange and public safety. Canadian officials stressed the importance of diversification in trade relationships, particularly at a time of intensified protectionist policies by other major partners.

Carney’s visit follows months of diplomatic efforts to repair the relationship and expand collaboration, and sets the stage for ongoing negotiations aimed at resolving long-standing trade issues and fostering deeper economic ties between the two countries.
