A powerful magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck western Japan’s Shimane prefecture, rattling the region but resulting in no major damage or life-threatening injuries. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the inland quake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, fortunately ruling out any risk of a tsunami. While the prefectural capital of Matsue and neighboring Tottori prefecture experienced strong shaking, local fire departments reported only minor injuries among residents.
The tremor caused immediate logistical disruptions, leading to the suspension and delay of Shinkansen bullet train services across the region. Despite the intensity of the quake, the Nuclear Regulation Authority confirmed that no abnormalities were detected at the Shimane nuclear power plant or related facilities. As a precaution, JMA officials have warned residents to remain vigilant, noting that significant aftershocks could continue to impact the area for approximately one week.
