Robin Hood Santas Steal from Montreal Supermarket in Protest of Rising Costs
Montreal: A group of 40 activists dressed as Santa Claus and elves stormed a Montreal supermarket on Monday, stealing thousands of dollars’ worth of food in a bold Robin Hood-style heist. The group ‘Robins des Ruelles’ (Robins of the Alleys), claimed the act was a protest against soaring living costs and corporate greed. “We’re working harder to afford food while chains profit from inflation,” their statement, “When Hunger Justifies the Means,” read. They accused corporations of holding “basic needs hostage”.
The stolen groceries were partially distributed under a Christmas tree in a public square, with the rest slated for local food banks. “Don’t forget—the hunger justifies the means. Merry Christmas!” the group declared.
Police are investigating the incident as a crime, but no arrests have been made. The supermarket chain condemned the theft, citing complex factors behind price hikes (global supply chains, trade conditions) and noting their 2025 donations: $1.15 million to food banks and $81 million in food aid.
