Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol Unveil DDLJ Bronze Statue in London
London: Bollywood icons Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol on Thursday unveiled a bronze statue of their iconic characters, Raj and Simran, from the 1995 classic Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ) at London's Leicester Square. This milestone marks a historic first for an Indian film, with DDLJ becoming the first Indian movie to be honoured with a statue in the prestigious Scenes in the Square trail.
The statue, crafted by sculptors Glynn Andrews and Jo Kirk, captures a signature pose from the film's hit song ‘Mehndi Laga Ke Rakhna’. Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol recreated the pose at the unveiling ceremony, surrounded by fans and media, with the former looking dashing in a black suit and the latter radiant in a blue saree.
Directed by Aditya Chopra, DDLJ has become a cultural phenomenon, shaping Indian cinema and romance for generations. The film's 30-year anniversary is a testament to its enduring impact, with screenings still ongoing at Mumbai's Maratha Mandir theatre.
An excited Shah Rukh Khan shared the news on Instagram. “Thrilled to unveil the bronze statue of Raj & Simran... A big thank you to everyone in the UK for making this possible,” he said.
“It's incredible to see DDLJ continue to receive so much love, even 30 years later,” Kajol said. "Watching the statue being unveiled in London felt like reliving a piece of our history.”
