A Ukrainian drone strike on Russia’s southwestern Samara region killed four people and injured one, the regional governor confirmed on Saturday.
“It is with deep sorrow that I report that four people were killed in an enemy drone attack last night,” Samara Governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev said in a statement on social media, adding that one person was hospitalized with injuries.
The strike is among the deadliest Ukrainian retaliatory attacks on Russian territory since the start of the war. According to Ukrainian officials, three people were killed in separate Russian overnight assaults across Ukraine.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said its air defenses shot down or intercepted 149 Ukrainian drones overnight, including 15 over the Samara region, located roughly 800 kilometers (497 miles) from the front line in Ukraine.
Moscow regularly reports intercepting Ukrainian drone attacks, which often target energy infrastructure. Kyiv has acknowledged carrying out such strikes, framing them as retaliation for Russia’s continued missile and drone bombardments of Ukrainian cities.
