Australian police are continuing their search for a gunman accused of killing two officers in northeast Victoria, urging him to surrender after four days on the run in dense bushland.
The suspect, 56-year-old Dezi Freeman, reportedly opened fire on a team of 10 officers at his home in Porepunkah on Tuesday before fleeing into the forest.
The shooting left Detective Neal Thompson, 59, and Senior Constable Vadim De Waart, 35, dead. A third officer was wounded in the lower body and is recovering after multiple surgeries.
Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Mike Bush described the case as a “horrific” incident, warning that Freeman is “armed and dangerous.” More than 450 officers are involved in the massive manhunt.
“If that person is listening, it’s time to lay down your firearms and give yourself up so this can end safely,” Bush urged.
Police said Freeman is believed to have strong survival skills and knowledge of the bush, making the search difficult.
As part of the investigation, police questioned Freeman’s 42-year-old partner and 15-year-old son on Thursday night. Both were later released.
Authorities revealed officers were at Freeman’s property to execute a search warrant, which included members of the sexual offences and child investigation squad. The reason for the warrant has not been disclosed.
Australian media reported that Freeman is linked to the “sovereign citizen” movement, a group that rejects the authority of government and police.
Deadly shootings involving police are rare in Australia. The last officer killed by gunfire was in 2023. Australia has maintained strict gun laws since the 1996 Port Arthur massacre, where 35 people were killed.
