Israel’s security cabinet has agreed on a plan to take control of Gaza City, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office announced.

The decision marks a shift from Netanyahu’s earlier statement that he wanted to take over the entire Gaza Strip. For now, the focus is on Gaza City — the largest city in the territory. Analysts say this move could be the first step towards a full takeover of Gaza.

The UN has warned that expanding Israel’s military operations could bring “catastrophic consequences” for Palestinian civilians and Israeli hostages still held in Gaza.

The war began after the Hamas attack on 7 October 2023, which killed about 1,200 people in Israel and saw 251 hostages taken into Gaza. Since then, Israel’s military offensive has killed at least 61,158 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry.

International media, including the BBC, are not allowed to freely enter Gaza to report on the ground.
