Cardinal Robert Prevost of the United States has been elected pope, marking the first time an American will lead the global Catholic community. The 69-year-old pontiff has chosen the name Pope Leo XIV.
Cheers erupted in St. Peter’s Square as white smoke billowed from the chimney atop the Sistine Chapel, signaling the successful election of a new pope by the 133 cardinal electors on just the second day of the conclave. The bells of St. Peter’s Basilica rang loudly as thousands of faithful watched the momentous event unfold on giant screens.
Shortly after, Pope Leo XIV stepped onto the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica and greeted the world with a heartfelt message: "Peace be with all of you!" Speaking in Italian, Spanish, and Latin, he expressed a deep wish for peace to “enter your hearts, reach your families and all people, wherever they are.”
The new pope thanked the cardinals for their confidence, and offered a special tribute to his former diocese in Peru, where he spent many years in pastoral service. “A loyal people has shared its faith and has given a lot,” he said.
He also paid homage to the late Pope Francis and led the crowd in prayer.
The formal papal election process included the traditional questions: acceptance of the role and the choice of a papal name. Following that, the senior cardinal announced in Latin, "Annuntio vobis gaudium magnum: Habemus Papam!" — "I bring you tidings of great joy: We have a pope!"
The announcement quickly drew global attention. Former President Donald Trump congratulated Pope Leo XIV, calling it "a great honor" for the United States. “What excitement, and what a Great Honor for our Country,” Trump shared on social media.
Rome remained electric with celebration, as pilgrims and locals alike gathered along the Via della Conciliazione to witness history and receive the pope’s apostolic blessing.
