Former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol was freed from custody on Saturday after a court overturned his arrest, prompting prosecutors to order his immediate release.
The Seoul Central District Court ruled in Yoon’s favor on Friday, granting his request to nullify the arrest order, which led to his swift release.
Following his release, Yoon expressed his gratitude to the court, commending its “courage and commitment to justice” in rectifying what he described as an unlawful detention, Yonhap news agency reported.
Yoon had filed a legal challenge last month, arguing that his indictment over the brief imposition of martial law was unjust.
His release comes 52 days after his initial detention on January 15, following his controversial declaration of martial law on December 3. He was officially arrested on January 19 and subsequently indicted on January 26.
Despite his release, Yoon remains under investigation for abuse of power and insurrection as authorities continue their probe into the failed martial law attempt.
