Ireland bat against England in 1st ODI

Bristol : Ireland captain William Porterfield won the toss and elected to bat against England in the first one-day international at Bristol on Friday.

England left out off-spinning all-rounder Moeen Ali from their side for the opening match of their home season, with leg-spinner Adil Rashid their lone specialist slow bowler on what was a green-tinged pitch underneath blue skies.

As announced by England's Ireland-born captain Eoin Morgan on Thursday, Kent's Sam Billings was behind the stumps -- the first time he had kept wicket in any form of cricket for eight months -- with Test keeper Jonny Bairstow deployed as a specialist batsman.

Morgan and Billings had returned from their stints in the Indian Premier League but all-rounders Ben Stokes and Chris Woakes, as well as regular England ODI keeper Jos Buttler had remained with their franchises in the lucrative Twenty20 competition.

Friday's fixture saw fast bowler Liam Plunkett win his 50th England ODI cap.

This match marks the start of England's build-up to next month's ODI Champions Trophy tournament on home soil.

Friday's clash was the first time Ireland had played England in England.

Their side contained seven survivors from the team that dramatically beat England by three wickets at Bangalore in the 2011 World Cup.

They included Kevin O'Brien, whose 113 off 63 balls featured the fastest-ever World Cup hundred.

That win six years ago remains Ireland's only victory over England.

This two-match series concludes at Lord's on Sunday.
