Slovakia’s Viktoria Harnkova and Russia’s Anastasia Tikhonova captured the women’s doubles title at the inaugural Manama Open after defeating Belgium’s Paulina Bekmotkina and Germany’s Mina Hodzic in straight sets, the Bahrain Tennis Federation said yesterday.
The duo sealed the final with a 6-4, 6-3 victory in a competitive match that showcased high technical standards, with the trophy presented by Bahrain Tennis Federation president Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Mubarak Al Khalifa in the presence of international tennis officials.
Attention now turns to the singles final, scheduled for Sunday at the Public Security Officers Club, where the winners of the semi-finals between France’s Fiona Ferro and the Netherlands’ Arantxa Rus, and between the United States’ Carol Lee and Russia’s Alina Korneeva, will contest the title.
The semi-final line-up was completed after Ferro advanced due to injury to American Claire Liu, while Rus booked her place with a three-set win over France’s Caroline Monnet. Carol Lee edged past France’s Jessika Ponchet in a tight three-set battle, and Korneeva progressed with a dominant straight-sets victory over Belgium’s Sofia Costoulas, setting the stage for a high-profile conclusion to the tournament.
