The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Monday that the prize money for the upcoming Women’s World Cup will exceed the men’s edition by more than a third, with a total purse of $13.88 million.
This is a huge jump from the $3.5 million offered in 2022 and even surpasses the $10 million prize fund for the last men’s World Cup.
The 13th edition of the women’s 50-over tournament begins September 30 in India and Sri Lanka, marking what the ICC calls a “monumental rise” from the last edition held in New Zealand three years ago.
“This is a defining milestone for women’s cricket,” said ICC Chairman Jay Shah. “A four-fold increase in prize money shows our commitment to the long-term growth of the women’s game. Our message is clear: women cricketers will be treated on par with men if they pursue the sport professionally.”
The winners will take home $4.48 million, a 239% increase from Australia’s $1.32 million prize in 2022. The runners-up will receive $2.24 million, compared to England’s $600,000 three years ago.
The tournament opener sees co-hosts India face Sri Lanka in Guwahati. Meanwhile, Pakistan will play all their matches in Colombo under a neutral venue agreement allowing India and Pakistan to compete safely in multi-nation tournaments.
The final is set for November 2, to be held in either Mumbai or Colombo, depending on Pakistan’s qualification for the title match.
