Ryan Rickelton showcased the value of recent form as he guided South Africa to a commanding 107-run victory over Afghanistan in their Champions Trophy opener.
The left-hander, coming into the tournament after a strong SA20 campaign where he finished as the fourth-highest run-scorer, built on his impressive start to the year, which included a double-century against Pakistan in the New Year’s Test.
Yesterday, he made his mark in the 50-over format, notching up his maiden ODI century in just his seventh appearance.
Batting first on a Karachi surface with a healthy layer of grass, South Africa posted a formidable 315 for six. Rickelton anchored the innings with a well-constructed 103, while Temba Bavuma, Rassie van der Dussen, and Aiden Markram chipped in with steady half-centuries.
Afghanistan, playing their first-ever Champions Trophy match, faced a daunting challenge as they needed to record their highest-ever successful chase to secure victory.
However, the Afghan batting lineup never found its footing. Rahmat Shah stood out with a spirited 90 off 92 balls, but with the next highest score being just 18, the chase never gained momentum.
Kagiso Rabada led the South African bowling attack with three wickets, while Lungi Ngidi and Wiaan Mulder claimed two each as Afghanistan were dismissed for 208 in 43.3 overs.
