Sweden Selects Rolls-Royce SMR for Major Nuclear Power Expansion

Swedish energy company Vattenfall has selected Rolls-Royce SMR to provide small modular reactors (SMRs) for a major nuclear power development, marking a significant step in Sweden's efforts to expand low-carbon electricity generation. The British company was chosen over U.S.-based competitor GE Vernova in a contract estimated to be worth several billion pounds, highlighting growing confidence in SMR technology and its role in Europe's future energy landscape.

The decision aligns with Sweden's long-term strategy to strengthen energy security, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and achieve its goal of reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045. Demand for electricity is expected to rise sharply in the coming decades due to industrial growth, digitalization, and the increasing electrification of transportation and manufacturing sectors. As a result, the Swedish government sees nuclear energy as an essential component of a reliable and sustainable energy mix.

Under the project, three Rolls-Royce SMRs will be constructed at the Ringhals nuclear site in southwest Sweden through Vattenfall's Videberg Kraft venture. Together, the reactors are expected to generate approximately 12 terawatt hours of electricity each year, supplying around 6% of Sweden's total electricity demand.

SMRs offer advantages over traditional nuclear plants because they use factory-built components that can be assembled more quickly and efficiently on-site. Energy Minister Ebba Busch said the project would boost energy independence, support economic growth, create jobs, and help stabilize electricity prices. The first reactor is expected to begin operating in the mid-2030s, pending regulatory approval.
