The US Special Envoy for Yemen, Tim Lenderking, stressed the urgency of a ceasefire by the Houthi rebel group during a press briefing yesterday. He warned that Houthi attacks in the Red Sea are jeopardizing the Yemen peace process and hindering vital humanitarian aid deliveries across the region.
Lenderking concluded a week of meetings in Oman and Saudi Arabia, focusing on regional stability and the ongoing conflict in Yemen.
His discussions included commending Oman’s efforts in facilitating peace talks and engaging with regional partners in Riyadh on April 2nd.
“These attacks undermine the Yemeni peace process and disrupt humanitarian assistance to the Yemeni people and others in need, including the Palestinians,” Lenderking stated.
He emphasized that a cessation of Houthi attacks is crucial on two fronts: “Houthi attacks must stop,” he said.
“Then we can refocus on the Yemen peace process and address the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people for a two-state solution.”
The envoy highlighted the devastating economic impact of the conflict in Yemen.
Ship arrivals at Al-Hudaydah Port, a vital lifeline for the country, have fallen by 15%.
Additionally, shipping traffic through the Suez Canal has rocketed by 60%.
