Smashes encore!

Following the successful Victor-Rayan Sports Bahrain International Series 2015 last week, the country is on for another exhilarating badminton event with the Bahrain International Challenge 2015 at Khalifa Sports City in Isa Town. 

The event organised by Bahrain Badminton and Squash Federation boasts a prize money of $15,000 and features around 150 star players representing 32 countries from across the globe, including some from the top 100, making it the highest profile badminton tournament ever held in the Kingdom. 

On a busy opening day, the focus was on men’s singles and doubles with the top-seed and world rank 42 Tien Minh Nguyen from Vietnam defeating local player Sanjay Jaimy 21-0, 21-2 

Other top class players who won were third seed and world rank 37 Spaniard Pablo Abian, fourth seed and world rank 46 Singaporean Zi Lang Derek Wong and Russia’s fifth seed and world number 50 Vladimir Malkov However, third seed Wong was pushed all the way by Cao Cuong Pham of Vietnam in a three-set thriller. World rank 40 and second seed RMV Gurusaidutt from India had a walkover win and will now takes on Jarolim Vicen from Slovakia, who beat Enis Sesalan from Turkey, in the second round.

Winner of the men’s singles in last week’s Victor – Rayan Sports Bahrain International Series 2015, 11th seed Sameer Verma from India, easily beat Bahrain’s 

Subhash Aroliveetil 21-4, 21-9 to advance to the second round. He is scheduled to meet the top seed, Tien Minh Nguyen, in the quarterfinals once through.

Local star Heri Setiawan, who had good run in the Victor-Rayan Sports Bahrain Series, fell at the first hurdle losing Canadian 14th seed Martin Giuffre in straight sets 21-16, 21-14.

In the men’s doubles, the winners of the Victor-Rayan series - Wee Tat Tan and Yip Jiun Tan from Malaysia – could not carry their spree over into this event and went down 19-21, 21-9, 21-15 to fifth seeds from Singapore, Danny Bawa Chrisnanta and Hendra Wijaya.

Top seeds Michael Fuchs and Johannes Schoettler from Germany comfortably won their round-of-32 game against local Bahraini pair of Adnan Ebrahim and Elyas Jaffar 21-4, 21-5.

Matches continue each day and run through to late in the evening.
