Arab stabs self to mislead probe
Manama
An Arab salesman deliberately stabbed himself with a knife in a bid to manipulate investigation into a BD13,000 embezzlement case, it has emerged.
The salesman reportedly wanted to pocket the amount, which belonged to his employer and sketched a fake robbery story to avoid suspicions, according to court files.
He reportedly stabbed in his stomach to support his claim that money was stolen in an armed robbery.
According to court files he was wearing a torn shirt and was bleeding when he went to police. He told prosecutors two masked men stole BD13,000 from him after they had assaulted him.
“I was walking and suddenly two strangers confronted me, one of them holding a metal pipe and the other a knife. They asked me for money. I refused and tightened the grip on my wallet,” the salesman said in his statement.
“Then they attacked me. One of them stabbed me with a knife, while the other hit me with the pipe. Then they made me unconscious with an anaesthetic agent. When I woke up I found that the money (BD13,000) I had collected from my employer’s clients was robbed.”
However, during questioning, the accused admitted to making up this story, stating the money was hidden in his house.
He claimed he made up the story to ‘bring to people attention the struggles of salesmen while performing their regular duties.’
He is now facing charges of robbery and lodging a false complaint. Prosecutors have ordered him to be kept in police custody, pending investigations.
