US defeat Puerto Rico 3-1

ManamaThe United States under coach Samuel Shweisky defeated Puerto Rico coached by Juan Albarran 3-1 (25-21, 25-18, 23-25, 25-22) in the third round of matches in Pool A yesterday evening in the 2017 FIVB Volleyball Boys’ U19 World Championship at Shaikh Isa Sports City in Riffa.

The American’s won the first two sets, then suffered a set loss in the third only to bounce back in to the fourth to record two wins from two.

Inspiring the US were Samuel Lewis (14 points) and Joel Bowles (13), while for Puerto Rico its top scorers were Gabriel Garcia (15) and Pedro Molina (14) who have a one win and two loss record in the pool.

Hosts Bahrain had a bye yesterday and play Puerto Rico tonight at 7pm under coach Yousif Khalifa Alasbool and go into the match with a one win against Egypt and a loss to the USA, with a final pool match against Tunisia tomorrow also at 7pm, while Tunisia and Egypt were playing in the late match last night.

Pool B action, Cuba shocked the defending champions Poland by winning 3-2 (21-25, 25-22, 25-9, 21-25, 15-10) with the top scorers for Cuba being Jose Carlos Romero Gonzalez (22) and Rey Isaac Flores Quesada (14) and for Poland it was Remiglusz Kapica (23) and Bartosz Firszt (11). This was Cuba’s first win after two consecutive losses, while have lost both its matches so far.

In the other Pool B match, Japan beat France 3-2 (24-26, 27-25, 23-25, 25-20, 15-13), with the top scorers for Japan being Kento Miyaura (22) and Shunichiro Sato (18) and for the French, Celestin Cardin and Pierre Derouillon (22 each).

The win for Japan was its second in as many matches and for France its first defeat in three.

Pool C action saw Argwntina defeat its South American neighbour Chile 3-0 (25-23, 25-13, 25-22) with the top scorers being Juan Barrera (18) for Argentina and Vicente Ibarra (12) and Esteban Mulchi (11) for Chile.

Argentina has two wins from two and is tied with South Korea, while Chile has lost all three of its matches.

Group D action saw Iran win 3-0 (25-23, 25-13, 25-22) against Mexico with Porya Yali (15) top scoring for the winning Iranian team and Raymond Gerald Stephens Zamora (8) for the Mexicans.

Iran has two wins from two and is tied with the Czech Republic who have won two and lost one. 

Two halls at Shaikh Isa Sports City will be hosting the matches. The first pair begin at 1pm, then 3pm, 5pm and the last two at 7pm.

All spectators are welcome to attend and entrance is 500 fils and tickets can be purchased at the gate.

The four pools comprise five teams each and will be played on a round-robin basis until Tuesday next week.

After the preliminaries, the top four teams in each pool move on to the next phase.

Pool C: South Korea (Donghyeok Im, 23, Sunho Kim 13) bt Turkey (Adis Lagumdzija, 22, Ali Deniz Yilmaz (17) 3-1 (26-28, 25-20, 25-21, 27-25). 

Pool D: Czech Republic bt China 3-1 (22-25, 25-16, 25-20, 25-22).
