MP calls for enhanced security at fishing ports

ManamaA Bahraini parliamentarian called for more protection at fishing ports across the island, considering the increasing threats on shores lately.

MP Theyab Al Nuaimi demanded the Government to deploy permanent security personnel at all fishermen’s ports in Bahrain. He submitted a proposal, asking Interior Ministry to handle the situation.

“Fishermen’s ports in the country lack proper security since five years,” Al Nuaimi said in a letter sent to the Head Office in the House of Representatives, ”Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry was previously tasked to provide guards at these facilities by contracting with private security companies.”

“But this procedure has been suspended for years now,” the letter added.

The MP said that his proposal was to prevent crimes that are carried out through these facilities, which could harm the Kingdom’s security.

As reported earlier, multiple cases were reported at ports in Budaiya, Sitra and Muharraq. The cases include smuggling weapons, escape attempts and even black magic practices.

Al Nuaimi, who is a member of the council’s Foreign Affairs, Defence and National Security Committee, submitted his proposal on Sunday.

According to the bylaws of the council, the proposal will be referred to the concerned committees in the council for reviewing and will be given a reply within eight weeks.
