Eight shops gutted in fire at Isa Town Market

Manama : Atleast eight shops were gutted in a fire that broke out at the traditional market in Isa Town yesterday morning.

Fifteen fire tenders, 56 officers and firemen were rushed to the spot and were successful in dousing the fire in 40 minutes. No casualties have been reported.

Civil Defence firefighters soon reached the scene and controlled the blaze, preventing it from spreading to nearby shops.

Eyewitnesses told DT News that the fire erupted at around 3 am badly damaging several furniture, household items and foodstuff shops.

Police cordoned off the entire market, preventing all from entering the market except shop owners.

Civil Defence General Director  Brigadier-General Abdulaziz Rashid Al Amer clarified that investigations are on to determine the cause of the fire.

This is the fifth incident to be reported in the market during the past five years.

Previously a huge blaze engulfed a store in Muharraq traditional market in 2014, causing damages that were estimated to cross approximately BD100, 000.

On June 2, 2014, flames engulfed several shops in the market, injuring a few workers.

On March 2014, the market was hit by a similar blaze. It took over a dozen fire engines and more than 35 firemen to control the fire in four hours.

The market was also hit by a devastating fire in 2012, leaving 500 shops completely gutted, an incident that is commonly remembered as the “Isa Town Inferno”.

Prime Minister HRH Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa had then instructed to launch investigations into the causes of the frequent mishaps.
