Bahrain court upholds life term of drug case accused

Manama: A Pakistani man, who was arrested in a drug smuggling case, has had his life sentence and BD10,000 fine upheld. The defendant, 53, was arrested at the Bahrain International Airport.

He was trying to smuggle heroin into Bahrain by hiding it in a wooden antique. The defendant is said to have been captured after being searched as he successfully passed the x-ray scan, according to court files. The heroin was reportedly stored in eight plastic bags totally weighing 1,946 grams, but he denied having links to them.

He stated that the antique was given to him by a countryman in Pakistan, named Abdulhadi, who requested him to deliver it to Bahrain. The defendant reportedly received a working permit in Bahrain after paying BD1,200 to an unknown person.
