More than 1,000 athletes from Bahrain and neighbouring countries will
participate in the 2015 Olympic Day, which Bahrain will celebrate on
Friday in a series of walking and running races to be held as part of
the event at the Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir.
It is being organised in cooperation with the Bahrain Road Runners
(BRR), whose chairman Khalifa Al Najem said the races will comprise a
variety of four races for juniors and adults.
The first three will be open for juniors six to 8 years and covers 400
metres, the second is open for 9-11 years over 800m and a third over
1.5km for 12-14 years, while the fourth category is over 5km and open
for adult runners aged from 15 years and above.
Online registration (www.bahrainroadrunners.com) for the races is open
today until 11.30pm, but participants can still sign up on Friday at
4pm at the Bahrain International Circuit.
BRR chairman Al Najem said prizes would be presented to the top three
in the junior sections, while the top 10 in the senior race will be
awarded.
The Olympic Day is celebrated all over the world on June 23 every
year, but the Bahrain Olympic Committee decided to hold it 11 days
earlier as it clashes with the Holy Month of Ramadan.
It is a celebration for youth around the world to observe the Olympic
values of Fair Play, Perseverance, Respect and Sportsmanship. It is
also a day to celebrate the International Olympic Committee’s three
pillars: Move, Learn and Discover.
It will be held under the patronage of the personal representative of
His Majesty the King for Charity Works and Youth Affairs, Supreme
Council for Youth and Sports chairman and Bahrain Olympic Committee
president Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
