Bahrain has begun enforcing a ban on thin plastic bags as part of new rules aimed at cutting plastic waste and curbing harm to the environment.
The Ministry of Industry and Commerce said single-use plastic bags less than 57 microns thick, along with thin fruit and vegetable bags, are now banned under resolution No 7 of 2026.
The ministry said shops and consumers must switch to approved alternatives, including reusable plastic bags thicker than 57 microns, paper bags, cloth bags and fully biodegradable bags.
In an awareness notice, the ministry explained the difference between bags that can still be used and those now barred from sale or use.
The move is part of Bahrain’s drive to reduce reliance on single-use plastics and push households and businesses towards cleaner choices.
The ministry urged consumers and commercial outlets to follow the new rules and check which bags are allowed, saying compliance would help meet the resolution’s environmental aims.
